Tweets Get Through Internet Blocks

Don’t call it a Twitter Revolution just yet. Sure, protesters in the Middle East are using the short-messaging service — and other social media tools — to organize… But don’t confuse tools with root causes, or means with ends. The protests in Tunisia, Egypt and Yemen are against dictators who’ve held power — and clamped down on their people — for decades. That’s the fuel for the engine of dissent. The dozen or more protesters that self-immolated in Egypt didn’t do it for the tweets.

Ok, everyone got that?!

Twitter is not the root cause of these uprisings. Twitter was not repressed. Twitter did not get inspired by events in other countries. And when risks are taken, Twitter does not get beaten over the head with batons or blasted in the face with toxic gases.

All those parts are handled by people.

Twitter can help organize. Facebook can help get the word out. Telephones can help. And sometimes, one assumes, yelling across a courtyard plays a role.

How helpful is social media? I don’t think we know the answer to that yet, but it’s worth noting that repressive regimes are pretty anxious to shut off access to it when movements get rolling.

What I’ve been reading online in regards to the crisis in Egypt has been somewhat unbearing — and now there is this often attacked straw man argument that social media is leading revolutions.

No one thinks that’s the case. Twitter doesn’t wear a beret. Facebook doesn’t have a goatee and a cache of arms. And the Internet did not write this post.

But it made it a lot easier for me to get it to you.

Almost simultaneously, many of the companies that pipe the Internet into and out of Egypt went dark as protesters were gearing up for a fresh round of demonstrations calling for the end of President Hosni Mubarak’s nearly 30-year rule, experts reported on all major media outlets. Egypt has apparently done what many technologists thought was unthinkable for any country with a major Internet economy: It unplugged itself entirely from the Internet to try and silence.

With police stations and the governing party’s headquarters in flames and much of Egypt in open revolt, President Hosni Mubarak deployed the nation’s military and imposed a near-total blackout on communications to save his authoritarian government of nearly 30 years.

Is this real….does censorship on this level happen in 2011?

Censorship is still pretty common in many countries around the world and as crazy and ghastly as this may sound…Egypt is not the first country to attempt to censor it’s citizens.

China has also restricted what its people can see online and received scrutiny for the practice when Google proclaimed that it would stop censoring its search results in China. Iran has also disrupted internet service over protests in the past.

Egypt Goes Dark…

Egypt goes dark...

Egypt shut down most internet connections including facebook, twitter and google behind reports of  violent clashes between police and  protesters.

Egyptian authorities asked mobile operators to turn down the network totally.Vittorio Colao, chief executive of UK based Vodafone Group which owns over 50% of Egypt’s carriers agreed to this request, saying it was legitimate under Egyptian law, but he hoped the government would reverse course soon.

Many of the mobile operators in Egypt, including Vodafone, rely on Telecom Egypt, the incumbent national fixed-line provider, to carry parts of their service. Telecom Egypt is majority owned by the government.

Egypt has dozens of Internet providers, but they rely primarily on five large carriers, including Telecom Egypt, for Internet connectivity.

Starting at 10:12 p.m. local time on Thursday night, Telecom Egypt went dark, followed by the four remaining main carriers over the next 13 minutes, said Jim Cowie, chief technology officer of Renesys Corp., a network security firm in Manchester, N.H. By 10:25 p.m., the country no longer existed on the Internet, he said.

It was also confirmed earlier in the week that “some” Egyptians were unable to access Twitter. However Government officials has denied this.

Rumors circulated last night there is a complete internet block in the capital.

And web analysts now report the majority of the country’s internet is now unreachable.

Serena Williams Foot Injury — Not as Bad as some “reliable” Media predicting

If you have been watching Serena Williams red carpet pics the past couple months, then you’ve seen the walking cast she has been sporting. Williams has already admitted that she had foot surgery, following an accident involving broken glass at a restaurant in Munich last summer. However, now it is being reported that her foot is badly infected and not responding to antibiotics.

SandraRose is reporting:

“Williams has a serious bone infection (osteomyelitis) in her right foot that is not responding well to intravenous antibiotics such as Vancomycin”. Considering this type of antibiotic is the last line of antibodies used in an injury such as this, some “reliable” media outlets are reporting she maybe loosing her foot.

Serena Williams recently shared details of her injury with  USA TODAY’s Christine Brennan. Serena was injured July 7 in Munich as she was walking out of a restaurant wearing sandals and “all of a sudden felt pain.”

Serena Williams Sporting Her Walking Cast

“The pain felt like kind of a stubbed foot, like ‘Ow,’ and I thought, ‘Wow, I stubbed my foot.’ Then in 20 seconds, or a minute, I started walking again. And it hurt some more. So we looked down and there was glass all over the floor. I was standing, recovering, thinking I got a little cut and telling my nephew, who was with us, to be careful. Then my practice partner put a cellphone down to the floor so we could see, and there was a huge puddle of blood. I said, ‘OMG, I don’t think this is good.’ ”

They went to an emergency room in Munich where Williams said she had X-rays and received 18 stitches: six inside the cut on her right foot and six on top of that foot, and six stitches on the bottom of her left foot. “I don’t know how it happened. Honestly, I think someone may have dropped something, which is how I got cut on both feet.”

Following all of that, she realized she needed surgery to correct a lacerated tendon, which is what prompted the need for the boot. “I’m out of it now,” she says, although she wore it just last week at a U.S. Open player party. “I hated that boot. I plan to use it for target practice for my serves.”

Serena, EOTM wishes you a speedy recovery!

Chelsea Handler and 50 Cent

Did Chelsea break 50 Cent heart? Word on the street has it that the late night talk show host dumped 50 Cent right before the holidays, leaving the 35-year-old rapper ‘heartbroken.’ 50 Cent was said to have spent the holiday season sending her gifts. Handler’s response? She sent them back with a note saying, “I can by my own gifts.” WOW!!

Chelsea uploads pic of her and 50 to twitter

It seems that Chelsea had already moved on, she was spotted canoodling with Uma Thurman’s ex, hotelier Andre Balazs, 54. “They snuck kisses” at Bing Bar on January 22, the source says of the two. Handler and Balazs were later spotted partying at Tao before leaving together at 2:30 a.m.

Anyhow, what’s done is done. Don’t feel too bad for 50 Cent, though. There’s little doubt that the rapper will have many more lovers, and he’ll get over Chelsea Handler soon enough.

Does Negative Publicity Help or Hurt your Business?

In Public Relations, Publicity, Uncategorized on January 26, 2011 at 10:11 pm

@EOTMpr

A couple days ago I asked this very question on my facebook page, “Does negative publicity help or hurt your business?”

In my humble opinion, I do believe negative publicity helps a business. Lots of movie stars seems to thrive on negative publicity. Several others have intentionally orchestrated negativity publicity to get into the limelight although many won’t admit it.

But there’s one word of caution here, if your business has a lousy product that no one wants or the business uses unethical means and abuses the customer’s trust then no amount of publicity positive or negative will help.

Why does negative publicity work?

I hate to say this but as a society, people love to see people fight, love to see a super star fall apart whether it’s a 50 cent, Michael Jackson, Lindsay Lohan or Britney Spears. Our society gets its thrills from seeing successful people fall apart. Donald Trump came into the public eye when he was close to a $ 10 billion bankruptcy and in the middle of a dirty divorce. When the Gap unveiled a new logo last year, the reaction was swift, intense and very, very negative. In fact, some people detested the look so much it actually inspired them: somebody set up a Twitter account (@GapLogo) that purported to speak in the unpopular design’s voice, and someone else built a site called CrapLogo.me that made it easy to convert any short text into an imitation of the brand’s new style. The Gap tried to pivot off the negative buzz by asking the online hate mob for advice, in a sort of “crowd sourcing” gimmick, but that didn’t go over well, either. In just four days, the company capitulated and announced that it would not change its logo after all.

Britney Spears stays in the limelight for all the wrong reasons and who can forget the late great Michael Jackson from court cases to financial troubles.

I am not saying they are intentionally orchestrating negative publicity, but the point I am making is negative publicity is giving them media attention and they are getting visibility for themselves.  How they use this visibility is an entirely different ball game altogether.

Better that people are talking about your brand than not…just my two cents.

Oprah’s Big Secret is A Half Sister

Oprah Welcomes Half Sister

Oprah’s recently learned about a half-sister living in Milwaukee and she has decided to share the news with the world. In 1963, when Oprah was 9, her mother, Vermita Lee, put a child up for adoption and never told Oprah. That child had a father who was not Oprah’s dad. On Monday’s show, 48 years later, Oprah and Patricia (last name withheld) were reunited with Lee. DNA tests confirmed the sisterhood. In searching for her birth mother, Patricia stumbled on the astounding truth. She then began the long work of contacting Oprah privately. Patricia has a daughter, Aquarius, and a son, Andre, giving Oprah a half-niece and -nephew.

Oprah said she was so impressed that Patricia didn’t try to sell the story and that she had to meet someone with that kind of character. “If that got out, it’s not fair, because it’s family business, and family business needs to be handled by family,” Patricia explained why she didn’t tell the media. “That’s not fair. It wouldn’t be fair to you.”

“It feels like closure for my sister Pat who passed. I did the best I could for her,” Oprah disclosed, revealing that she put her sister through drug rehab before she passed. “It feels to me like you are Pat on her best day. You are who she wanted to be without the drugs.” Congrats to the happy new found family!

The Skinny on Hollywood – Don’t Count Me Out Yet – Can you say Sea Salt Diet 3x’s?

Skinny bodies may be ridiculed in the media but the pressure to look thin is fiercer than ever. It’s enough to make me wonder, “will I eat a chicken wing in this town ever again”?

Carla B

I’ve always lived by the mantra of “if you don’t like something, change it”, and since I’ve been back in Los Angeles after almost ten years in Atlanta I am doing just that!

Living in Atlanta made me a little lazy. There was no big thing if you gained 5 pounds, it’s the south, people gotta eat..right?  I’d gained about 10 pounds the first two years of being there and maintained that weight gain for about six years, then fast forward to today. I found myself gaining a couple pounds a year and the weight was becoming harder to drop.

I noticed the weight gain too, I felt it in by back, legs, etc etc etc, lol.  My friends would say, “girl you good, men like it thick in the south so you straight”.

Despite all this, I kept a membership at the gym. I’d wake up each morning and run up my steps for about 20 or 30 minutes, go outside and walk up my hill, jog around the block, go to the gym– all in one day. Throughout all that, I didn’t see any real results.

I knew once I arrived back on the west coast things would change and fast, especially if I wanted to continue my career in the entertainment industry. All of my family and friends in California were from a size 0 to 5, anything bigger was a no no.

So, 6 months after I arrived back to Cali…I am still overweight by at least 15 pounds and I didn’t notice how bad I looked until I saw my photos from the last event.I was totally disgusted with myself. I think that was my turning point, we all have one…some choose unconsciously not to accept it.

I decided right then and there that if I am behind the scenes or in front of the camera I need to look my best at all times and one thing I knew for sure was, I did not want my weight to be an issue for anyone to speculate.I realize not everyone cares about fitting the standard of Hollywood “beauty”, but I sure do! One thing I knew for sure was that I want to always represent my clients, my company, my family and myself in the best light possible. Being fit and healthy can help me do just that plus add a couple more years to my lifespan.

Red Carpet Ready in Atlanta March - 2010

At my heaviest, November 2010

So, I started looking up diets and found one that I thought would work for me, the “Lemon and Sea Salt Diet” in conjunction with a mild cardio routine. By the second day I actually felt lighter and healthier, the third day my friends thought I was a little to hyper and asked what I had been drinking, the surprise was I hadn’t had a glass of wine in a week. I had so much energy. I actually joked and said next time me and the girls hung out I was going to tell the bartender to give us all a round of “sea salt and lemon drinks on ice”, and it would be on me!

On a more serious note, this diet is very stringent and the weight loss is immediate. You see results over a 3 to 10 day period. The lemon and sea salt diet isn’t for everyone, its most appropriate for people who need to quickly cleanse their system of toxins or who want to lose enough weight to fit into an outfit in time for the weekend. This is the very same diet singer Beyonce used to lose 20 pounds for her role in the movie Dream Girls.

How It Works

  • The lemon and sea salt diet, also known as the Master Cleanse Diet and the Lemonade Diet, was originally created by natural healer Stanley Burroughs as a short-term fast to rid the body of toxins. In addition to working as a detoxifying diet, the lemon and sea salt regimen has gained worldwide attention as a quick weight loss solution. The diet is effective for fast weight loss because it eliminates solid foods, increases frequency of bowel movements and significantly decreases daily calorie intake.
  • Pros and Cons

As with any fad diet, there are pros and cons to losing weight with lemon and sea salt. The pros are that you can lose up to 2 lbs. per day, it is simple to make the mixtures and follow the program, and no long-term health problems have been associated with this diet. The cons are that drinking the liquid mixtures quickly becomes monotonous, you need to stay near a restroom and remaining on the diet too long may result in temporary side effects, such as fatigue and dizziness.

    Warning

Although the lemon and sea salt diet is not known to cause any long-term side effects, this weight loss solution is not appropriate for everyone. Since this weight loss regimen is very strict, it is highly recommended that you check with your doctor before beginning the program. Medical professionals generally advise pregnant women, people with low blood pressure and cancer patients not to use the lemon and sea salt weight loss program.

    Procedure

The lemon and sea salt diet is easy to follow. Simply mix 12 to 14 tbsp. of lemon juice, 12 to 14 tbsp. of maple syrup and 1/2 tsp. of cayenne pepper into 2 L of water. Whenever you feel hungry, drink this mixture. Drink the 2 L mixture completely by the end of each day that you stay on this diet. Other than the mixture, drink a salt water flush mix once daily. To make the salt water flush mix, just mix 1 tbsp. of sea salt into 1 L of water. These two mixes are the only components of the lemon and sea salt diet. You may drink as much water as you like.

    2010 NFL Year in Sports

In Uncategorized on January 25, 2011 at 7:52 am

    January 25, 2011

By: Josiah Bernard aka Joe Jigga

    Joe Jigga knows Sports

    Michael Vick

The #1 story in my opinion in the NFL would be Michael Vick… Once slated as the 2nd string QB, he took advantage of his opportunities and became the starting QB of the Philadelphia Eagles. He’s pulled off the one of the most exciting comebacks ever in the NFL against the New York Football Giants (my team).

    Michael Vick

He has defied the odds where critics have said he may be washed up, or just doesn’t have what it takes to be an NFL Quarterback. So much that he has been mentioned as an NFL MVP candidate, it’s encouraging to see how he has worked his tail off to restore his name… he continues to talk to kids in schools regarding dog fighting, and not to make the mistakes he made. Reality is, not all of us get the same opportunity at redemption. Unfortunately, are line of work defines whether that opportunity would come. For Michael Vick reputation will never be what it used to be, but in the end, I applaud Mike Vick…

    Brett Favre

Thank goodness Brett Favre is retiring. His streak of games played has come to an end. He has been a focal point of an investigation regarding sending text picture of his manhood to a female employee of the Jets a few years back… I think most of us are just excited that we won’t have to endure another offseason of whether he will play the following year.

    Brett Favre

    NFL Playoffs

So this 2010 NFL season playoff games may have not been exciting as past season playoff games, but there is a team called the New York Jets that has made for an interesting season.

We have the class clown head coach in Rex Ryan… He is an NFL head coach who I’d say is equivalent to Chad Ochocinco. His style as a head Coach is different from most, but the Jets have turned into an organization without class. He is very bashful and outspoken. He may rub many the wrong way, but that is who he is. During the HBO Hard Knocks, he was asked to tone down the use of profane language, he was very outspoken on his prediction that the Jets would be Super bowl champs at the end of the 2010 season, his bashfulness rubbed off onto his players. Unfortunately, some players such as Antonio Cromartie when asked to name all 9 of his kids, he couldn’t name all of them, 4 Months later, we hear Cromartie calling Brady an a**hole for whatever personal reasons. We hear the Jets talk about how disrespected they feel in the league. Perhaps coach Rex Ryan, brought that upon his team. Coaches are big on not being outspoken, giving other teams bulletin material to feed off of. However Ryan felt he could write the check for everyone to see, and let his players cash it on Sundays. His bashful way is the same reason for the backlash after his team loses. You can’t disrespect other teams, and not expect to hear about it if you don’t win. When the organization you represent hasn’t won since Super bowl III. In some way, shape or form, this class clown coach has improved the image of the New York Jets, at least for now. They are being talked about again, but is the trash talk beneficial? The Steelers have brought the Jets down to earth again by ending their season in a great AFC championship game. So far, the trash talking hasn’t won the jets a Super bowl, and as I see it, as long as he talks and not win, the New York Jets will be the Class Clown team of the NFL.

Let’s discuss the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team that is heading to their 3rd Super bowl in 6 years. They played the first 4 games of the season without Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger who was suspended for violating the NFL personal conduct policy. Who would have thought, the Steelers would end up in the Super bowl when you don’t have your starting QB for the first 4 games of the season. The Steelers posted a 3-1 record thanks in most part to an impressive defense. Roethlisberger who’s suspension was due to a sexual abuse case, responded by being a leader for his team upon his return. The whole legal process may not have served justice (that’ll be discussed in the future), but on the field Big Ben served his team justice. He has proved himself time again that he belongs in the upper ranks of Tom Brady and many other NFL greats. As I watch the success of of the Steelers, the only thing I am left to wonder is, why wasn’t coach Mike Tomlin included as a coach of the year candidate? One thing is for sure, he is on his way to being one of the Steelers great coaches of all time.

The 2010 NFL Post Game Rant of the year award goes to Bart Scott after the New York Jets defeated the New England Patriots… check it out clicking this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJshw2Axsqc.  And just to make mention, I had to make a mockery of it. LOL
