Scammer calls social worker on Mariah Carey

In Breaking News, Celebrity News on May 13, 2011 at 6:45 pm

New parents Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon got a hospital visit from a social worker this week, according to Cannon, after someone complained that Carey was abusing her newborn twins by consuming alcohol and drugs while breastfeeding.

Husband Nick Cannon said Thursday that the situation may have been triggered by a nurse’s suggestion that a small amount of dark beer could help Carey’s breastfeeding — and Cannon added that it all could have been the work of a scammer trying to sell a story to tabloids.

Carey and her twins, born two weeks ago, remain hospitalized while she recovers from a Caesarean delivery and the babies are treated in a neonatal intensive care unit.

“Child protective services were called with allegations that, you know, there was some drinking and drugs and all that going on while in the hospital, which again makes no sense to me,” Cannon told CNN’s Piers Morgan in an interview to air Thursday night. “Like, how would a hospital even allow that?”

In an interview Thursday with A.J. Hammer to air on HLN’s “Showbiz Tonight,” Cannon said the social worker approached him in the hospital hallway, saying “they were here to see me because there had been allegations that there was drug and alcohol use, not only during the stay in the hospital.”

The trigger for the social worker’s visit Tuesday was apparently a suggestion by a nurse that Carey drink “a small amount of Guinness, the dark beer, that it improves the yeast for breastfeeding or the yeast improves breastfeeding,” Cannon said. Carey consumed a small amount, following the nurse’s suggestion, according to Cannon.

“I guess someone maybe overheard that (suggestion), and this is a good way to make a quick buck, or call the tabloids,” he said. “It’s kind of sad that people think that we’ll make money off of these newborns.”

A spokesman for the Los Angeles Department of Children and Family Services would not comment, citing confidentiality rules.

Pakistan suicide bombs kill 80 to avenge bin Laden

In Breaking News, World News on May 13, 2011 at 3:14 pm

HABQADAR, Pakistan – A pair of Taliban suicide bombers attacked paramilitary police recruits eagerly heading home for a break after months of training, killing 80 people Friday in the first act of retaliation for the U.S. raid that killed Osama bin Laden.

In claiming responsibility, the al-Qaida linked militant group cited anger at Pakistan’s military for failing to stop the American incursion on their soil.

The blasts in the northwest were a reminder of the savagery of Islamist insurgents in Pakistan. Tensions also have risen between the U.S. and Islamabad over allegations that some elements of Pakistani security forces had been harboring bin Laden, who died in a May 2 raid in Abbottabad, a garrison town about three hours’ drive from the scene of the bombing.

James Durbin Eliminated; Three Remain on ‘American Idol’

We were all shocked when it was announced that James Durbin was heading home. While many expected James to make it to the finals and go home with the title of American Idol, like Chris, his time was cut short, leaving the studio audience stunned.

“I did so much stuff that’s never been done on this show before,” he said.

Wiping away tears, the rocker from California said he had hoped to get to the final three but was thankful for the experience.

“I did what I came here to do… to give metal a chance,” Durbin said.

The World Celebrates Katherine Hepburn’s Birthday

In Breaking News, Celebrity News on May 13, 2011 at 4:31 am

One-hundred-four years ago on May 12, a legend was born. Katherine Hepburn was a trailblazer, a firebrand of a woman who refused to be a follower. She was born into a wealthy Connecticut family and enjoyed the privileges of her parents’ wealth. Her mother was suffragist, her father a urologist and co-founder of Planned Parenthood, a recent target of Republican ire.

Hepburn was more than just an actress. She was a model for women who desired independence from the status quo. She was defiant against outdated traditions and was a devout atheist. Perhaps her disbelief in a deity stemmed back to the day when, as a 14-year-old girl, she found her beloved older brother dead from an apparent suicide. She was fiercely loyal, and she memorialized him in her own way. For years after, she used his birthdate—November 8—as her own.

Eminem Admits He ‘Almost Died’ From Drug Overdose

Eminem almost died.

The iconic MC tells Vibe magazine in its forthcoming issue that during a relapse, he overdosed on pills he acquired from an “acquaintance” and almost became one of music’s greatest casualties.

“My doctor told me those mysterious new pills were methadone, which is used to wean heroin addicts off dope,” he told the mag in its forthcoming “Real Rap” issue.

“Had I known it was methadone, I probably wouldn’t have taken it. But as bad as I was back then, I can’t even say 100 percent for sure. My doctor told me the amount of methadone I’d taken was equivalent to shooting up four bags of heroin. Even when they told me I almost died, it didn’t click.”

Em admitted to the publication that he was an addict and through his uncontrolled dependence, he began to identify with his mother, with whom he’s had several public battles over the last decade.

“It’s no secret I had a drug problem,” he said. “If I was to give you a number of Vicodin I would actually take in a day? Anywhere between 10 to 20. Valium, Ambien, the numbers got so high I don’t even know what I was taking.”After suffering a knee injury that required surgery, he was not prescribed painkillers, which led him to search his house for drugs he’d hidden.
