12 Hours to Stop Uganda’s Gay Death Penalty

In Breaking News, Politics, World News on May 11, 2011 at 3:08 am

David Kato

In 12 hours, the Ugandan Parliament may vote on a brutal new law that carries the death penalty for homosexuality. Thousands of Ugandans could face execution — just for being gay.

We’ve helped stop this bill before, and we can do it again. After a massive global outcry last year, Ugandan President Museveni blocked the bill’s progress. But political unrest is mounting in Uganda, and religious extremists in Parliament are hoping confusion and violence in the streets will distract the international community from a second push to pass this hate-filled law. We can show them that the world is still watching. If we block the vote for two more days until Parliament closes, the bill will expire forever.

We have no time to lose. Almost half a million of us have already joined the call — let’s get to one million voices against Uganda’s gay death penalty in the next 12 hours — click here to take action, then forward this email to everyone:

Being gay in Uganda is already dangerous and terrifying. They are regularly harassed and beaten, and just months ago, gay rights activist, David Kato (pictured above), was brutally murdered in his own home. Now LGBT Ugandans are threatened by this draconian law which imposes life imprisonment for people convicted of same-sex relations and the death penalty for “serial offenders”. Even NGOs working to prevent the spread of HIV can be imprisoned for “promoting homosexuality” under this hate-filled law.

Right now, Uganda is in political turmoil — in the wake of the Arab spring, people across the country are taking to the streets, protesting high food and gas prices. President Museveni has responded by violently cracking down on the opposition. This upheaval has provided religious extremists in Parliament the perfect chance to slip in the shelved anti-gay bill just days before Parliament closes and all proposed laws are wiped from the books.

President Museveni backed away from this bill last year after international pressure threatened Uganda’s aid and support. With violent protests sweeping the streets, his government is more vulnerable than ever. Let’s build a million strong petition to stop the gay death penalty bill again and save lives. We only have 12 hours — sign below, then tell friends and family:

Earlier this year, we stood in solidarity with Uganda’s equality movement to show that every human life, no matter what creed, nationality or sexual orientation, is equally precious. Our international petition condemning the gay death penalty law was delivered to Parliament – spurring a global news story and enough pressure to block the bill for months. When a tabloid newspaper published 100 names, pictures and addresses, of suspected gays and those identified were threatened, Avaaz supported a legal case against the paper and we won! Together we have stood up, time and time again, for Uganda’s gay community — now they need us more than ever.

With hope and determination,

Emma, Iain, Alice, Morgan, Brianna and the rest of the Avaaz team

Knowing there would be disbelievers, the U.S. says it used convincing means to confirm Osama bin Laden’s identity during and after the firefight that killed him.

Already, those questions are spreading all over the world. In the absence of photos and with his body given up to the sea, many people do not want to believe that Osam Bin Laden is really dead.

Didn’t the US report this back in 2001 whereas they reported he died peacefully due to an untreated lung complication…as reported on Fox News. Click here to see live report.

Facebook Users be careful — Malware exploits bin Laden death in search

In Breaking News, Politics on May 2, 2011 at 5:22 pm

Online scammers have been quick to capitalize on what will undoubtedly be one of the most significant news events this year – the death of Osama bin Laden.

Within hours of the news that the Al Qaeda leader had been killed by U.S. forces on Sunday, malware was found in Web sites optimized to show up on Web searches related to the event and in scams on Facebook.

This photoshopped image of Osama bin Laden is making the rounds on Web sites and Facebook pages hiding malware and spam.

Image searches and items labeled as video are proving particularly problematic as people are drawn to visual images of the terrorist leader. At least two domains were found to be serving up fake anti-virus rogueware called “Best Antivirus 2011” on searches for “Osama bin Laden body” on Google image search in Spanish, according to a blog post by Kaspersky Lab.

U.S. nuclear advocates try to limit political impact of Japan reactor crisis

Nuclear power advocates are waging an intense lobbying campaign on Capitol Hill this week in an attempt to limit the political fallout from the reactor crisis in Japan — which threatens to undermine already shaky plans for expanded nuclear capacity in the United States.

Lobbyists with the Nuclear Energy Institute and some of the United States’ largest energy firms, including Exelon Corp  of Chicago, are holding meetings with key lawmakers and standing-room-only briefings for staffers in an attempt to tamp down talk of restrictions in response to the Japanese disaster.

Help Support Obama Bullying Speech and Anti Bullying Campaign

In Breaking News, Politics on March 11, 2011 at 10:48 pm

Are you willing to help support Obama bullying speech and Obama anti bullying campaign?

On Thursday at the white house, a conference was held and Obama talks about bullying,  a issue that affects millions of young people each year. President Obama told the parents and administrators to create a effective support system for their children and students.

He says, “as adults, we can lose sight of how hard it can be sometimes to be a kid. It’s easy for us to forget what it’s like to be teased or bullied, but it’s also easy to forget the natural compassion and the sense of decency that our children display each and every day when they’re given a chance.”

Now, Barack and the first lady Michelle launched the #StopBullyingNow campaign earlier this week and invited Facebook to join for an exclusive anti bullying summit on Thursday, March 10th in Washington, DC.

Obamas is encouraging everyone to participate by logging on to StopBullying.gov, it has a lot of resources for preventing bullying.

“We’ll be talking with students, teachers and parents about how to stop bullying,” explained Mrs. Obama. “And about the responsibility each of us has to make sure our children treat each other with respect.”

Testimonies from people who have been effected will also be held there.

What are your thoughts about the Obama bullying speech and his anti bullying campaign? What are some solutions to bullying you can think of? Illinois Abolishes Death Penalty

In Breaking News, EOTM News, Politics on March 10, 2011 at 1:15 am

By: Tawanda Cawthon

Illinois has banned the death penalty, becoming the sixteenth state to abolish capital punishment for convicted prisoners. Gov. Patrick Quinn signed the bill to end the practice and commuted the sentences of 15 inmates who had been on the state’s Death Row.

The abolition of the death penalty in Illinois has been in the making for 11 years. It was in the year 2000 that then-Gov.George Ryan issued a moratorium on executions, after 13 inmates condemned to death had their sentences overturned.

Later, Ryan would clear death row. Since then, the state has approved several reforms but the state’s current governor, Patrick Quinn, said he signed the bill abolishing the death penalty because it is a system that’s impossible to make perfect.

Tea Party After 2 Years

In Breaking News, Politics on February 26, 2011 at 3:42 am

The Tea Party has already stitched together a colorful history made of success and failure, anger and optimism and lots of controversy.

And as the movement marks its second anniversary, it’s worth asking: Where is it headed?

“It started spontaneously and organically as a protest/rally movement. And it fully matured, because of the timing, into a movement that involved electoral politics,” Tea Party Patriots co-founder Mark Meckler told CNN.

“And so, here we are, on our second anniversary, we’ve proven that this is a movement that’s here to stay. It’s time to get serious about — and pushing forward — a long-term policy.”
