While the team is associated by name with New York City, the Harlem Globetrotters were actually born as the Savoy Big Five in Chicago, created by Abe Saperstein in the early ’20s to stir up business for the Savoy Ballroom. The Globetrotters have since evolved into a touring theatrical show and an unstoppable team.

Carla B and Teangelo Bell of EOTM Media had the opportunity to sit with two of the legendary Harlem Globetrotters, “Special K” Daily and “The Shot” Versher while touring in Los Angeles in commemoration of Black History Month and Magicians of Basketball, a national youth program designed to promote character and an active lifestyle.

The two Globetrotters visited Para Los Ninos Charter School in Los Angeles. Greyhound, Official Bus of the Harlem Globetrotters donated tickets to the game for students.

As part of a unique national partnership with the U.S. Department of Education and the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, the Harlem Globetrotters will speak to youngsters about the team’s ‘C.H.E.E.R. Challenge’ program.  The interactive program focuses on the character traits; Cooperation, Healthy Mind & Body, Effort, Enthusiasm and Responsibility. By incorporating the Globetrotters signature ball handling skills into a motivational presentation for the students, the kids will be challenged to keep a commitment to regular physical activity and take the President’s Challenge to lead an active lifestyle.
