When I heard the news of Elizabeth Edwards passing my thoughts and prayers immediately went out to her family in their time of need.

I cannot possibly fathom how having cancer and going through very private matters publicly with her estranged husband had been, I’m sure it was an especially difficult situation for the entire family.

However, through her journey, Elizabeth Edwards displayed courage and transparency about her illness, reminding women about the importance of getting screened.

Even her announcement days before her passing that she had decided further treatment would be futile generated intense public and media interest.

Life does not go on forever.  We all know that.  Ms. Edwards knew that. We all were just hoping for that little miracle, but fate had another idea.

Elizabeth Edwards has passed from this earth, as have so many patients before her who faced their cancer bravely and with fortitude.  And many will, unfortunately, follow.  She has provided lessons for many as to how to handle this terrible disease with dignity and courage under difficult circumstances.

May she rest in peace, and may her family find comfort in her memory during the difficult months and years to come.
